Just a week ago, we found ourselves in a sublet apartment nestled in the heart of a kibbutz, and it felt like we were in paradise.
We entered kibbutz Dafna and parked next to old buildings from the 60th. Today, you see mostly old people and students here; in the past, this was a place of young, idealistic volunteers. We could not believe that walking 5 minutes away from there would lead us to a green landscape with one of the most substantial rivers in Israel, the Dan River. A frozen river is a perfect answer to the hot wheater! We jumped into the river, walked to the kibbutz’s playground, and explored secret corners.
But let’s start from the beginning. Why did we sleep there in a local stranger’s apartment?
Staying at Stranger’s apartment
We love camping with our kids, immersing ourselves in the beauty of nature. But recently, I stumbled upon a Facebook group called “Sublet between Friends” and noticed a giveaway for new members. Days later, to my surprise, I received a delayed message on Facebook: “Congratulations! You’ve won a night at Kibbutz Dafna!” I was overjoyed. Winning things don’t happen to me often, and Kibbutz Dafna is one of the most highly sought destinations in the north.
It’s no wonder Israelis adore staying in Kibbutz Dafna or nearby Kibbutz Hagoshrim. These places are like green havens, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and the beautiful, practical Dan River. Plus, they’re conveniently close to major attractions. Staying in a kibbutz feels more like living in a cozy village than a bustling city, offering a unique and memorable experience.
What is a kibbutz?
Kibbutzes represent a remarkable socialist experiment in communal living. Originating at the outset of the 20th century, these communities were founded on the principle of collective labor, where everyone worked and lived together, enjoying equal rights and sharing profits. However, as time has passed, many kibbutzes have undergone significant transformations, evolving into more individualized and diverse communities.
Despite these changes, the spirit of cooperation and mutual support remains a defining characteristic of kibbutz life. Over the years, members of these communities have often established local industries to sustain themselves economically. These industries not only provide livelihoods but also contribute to the unique character and self-sufficiency of each kibbutz.
What was it like to sleep there?
We arrived at a charming apartment with two rooms and a living room. The condo was fully equipped, and we only brought towels, bed linen, and food products.
The truth is that I was a little afraid that our kids would destroy the place, as it is someone’s house. But fortunately, no damage was done.
I strongly recommend you book this place! Suitable for couples + 2/3 kids, cute, clean, and in perfect spot.

This area has so many attractions!
Experience the wonders of nature by purchasing tickets from the Nature and Parks Authority to visit Tel Dan, Nahal Snir, or the Banias. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Nimrod Fortress, Odem Forest, and the captivating landscapes of the Golan Heights.
For a unique and memorable experience, consider taking a guided tour of a Kurlender farm, where you can interact with and feed the cows. It’s an adventure the whole family will cherish!
What to do within the kibbutz?
Craving some fancy chocolate? Inside the kibbutz, you’ll discover delightful chocolate workshops at “Shulman’s,” along with unique cafes and restaurants housed in cool trucks, including Pizza Truck and Shiri Pasta.
But that’s not all! Within the kibbutz, you’ll find a newly built playground, a basketball court, and Israel’s top-rated campsite, all awaiting your arrival amidst picturesque stream views.
Still feeling hungry? Just a 5-minute drive away lies the Gan HaTzafon complex at Maayan Baruch Junction, offering even more dining options to satisfy your cravings.
In summary, it’s an unforgettable experience for the whole family. From splashing in the river to enjoying the playground, the kids won’t want to leave the kibbutz. We highly recommend it to anyone seeking a nature-filled getaway at Kibbutz Dafna.

Weather/Clothing
If you love cold weather, come here during the winter and autumn. This place is great for summer, compared to the south of Israel. It is not too hot, and you can swim in the Dan River.
Pro-tip: if you come here, make it at least two nights, as you will not want to leave!
